hansokolow's notes:  For a digital soundboard with several solid digital audience copies to choose from, this matrix presented a lot of problems.  While I like the sound of Dave Brotman's FOB source over this one, I had trouble lining it up exactly with the DSBD (sometimes that happens), and the result was a constant, slowly changing atmospheric quality that was unacceptable.  I switched to this DAUD and things lined up much better.  This DAUD has level adjustments in the opener, Feel Like A Stranger, and I counter adjusted to try to account for that.  This DSBD has some limitations.  Although it comes with a decent amount of crowd noise, there is a bit of mutedness to it, which is greatly enhanced by adding the DAUD, imho.  The analog SBD patches all over set 2 created brief phasing and weirdness and are fairly noticeable, but I left it that way, as it is less jarring as pulling out the SBD entirely.  The first instance is at around 9 seconds into Fire On The Mountain, then again at 10:07, at 10:36, for 19 seconds (this is the worst of it), and at 11:16; in Terrapin at 9:24 for 6 seconds, at 9:58 for 4 seconds, briefly at 10:21 and 11:05, and finally at 11:23; in The Other One, at 6:16 for about 4 seconds; in Wharf Rat at 0:41, at 1:07, at 2:36, at 6:28, at 8:41, and at 10:27; and in Sugar Magnolia at 5:21.  Also, hardly an issue, some crowd noise is missing from the DSBD between Fire and Playin'.  Both these FOB sources had a gap of about the same size in Drums, from 1:32 to 3:47, so that section is all soundboard.  The DAUD had some bad digital fuzz in the last few seconds of the encore, so I patched in Brotman's DFOB for that section, from 5:00 to 5:04.

hansokolow's notes:  Charlie Miller mentions in his notes that two SBD cassette masters were used to make this SBD, but doesn't say where the cuts are, so I assume that some of the problems I found, which are minor, and only appear in set 2, are due to his patching.  His patching is done very well, it's just that the matrixing process makes these changes very apparent.

- There's some weirdness in the first ten seconds or so of Crazy Fingers.
- There's a tiny bit of digifuzz on the DAUD that I cut out in Uncle John's Band at 1:16, and a split-second dropout on the SBD a few seconds later at 1:18.
- In Drums there is a spot of diginoise on the DAUD that I cut out at 7:28.
- At 1:07 in Space, the DAUD has a break, and then backs up several minutes and starts again.  I cut out the doubled section, but there is a couple of seconds of clicking where the join is, so I faded that out, so there are two seconds of SBD only there.
- There was some horrible feedback 4 minutes into the encore, and even though it happened in the room, I pulled it down, because it is awful and it was throwing my levels out of whack.
- Also, there are quite a lot of feedback problems on the vocals throughout the show.  Nothing I can do about that, though.

Secondary Source used to patch two master dat dropouts in Promised Land and two in Eyes.  Each dropout was approx. one second in length. Dropouts patched/crossfaded in soundforge.

-----------------------------------

My Notes:  One of the first shows I made a matrix of, so I don't have notes, but it turned out quite well.

Caveat: I don't take meticulous notes of every splice and adjustment I make, it's already time consuming enough, but I will explain my process.  Every disc I make is seamless for longer media.  I use the most reliable source, usually whichever is digital, if both are the same generally it's the SBD, and the other sources is time shifted to match that.  With analog sources there is always some wavering.  Within reason I try to adjust for the by making small, millisecond cuts, lining up the drum beats.  These are smoothed over and when mixed with another source, undetectable.  There still may be occasional phasing, particularly in the vocals and the cymbals.  Believe me that I do everything I can to minimize problems like that.  That includes cutting out spots of diginoise and blips and things.  Whenever there is something missing from one source but present on the other, I bring up the volume a tad on the source that's left, to minimize the jarring nature of one source dropping out.  When the crowd noise at the start of a set is less than two minutes or so, I don't make a separate crowd track.  I export the final result to aiff files, and then convert those into flacs at the smallest setting, using xACT for Mac, and that also makes then SBE safe.

I hope everyone enjoys the product of my labor, and I'm glad to give something back to the community that has given me and others so much music over the years.  Thanks, brothers and sisters.

hansokolow's notes:  This is a redo of a show I already made a matrix of, but this is using Charlie Miller's superior SBD source, which has an analog generation in set 1, but set 2 is all digital.  I used Dave Brotman's FOB Schoeps source, as it was the clearest to my ears, and the glitches in the first track were fairly easy to fix.  No music is lost in these glitches, in fact music is doubled, so I cut out what was unnecessary and blended the rest.  There is a lot of taper banter and crowd noise in the first track of each set that I left in, almost 6 minutes for set 1 and about 4:30 for set 2.  The first set of the SBD has a cassette generation, so time stretching was needed.  Much of the crowd noise between songs is cut out of the SBD, including the last drumbeat of Memphis Blues.

Tech Notes

SHNs were decoded to wave and SF 6.0 was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave.  CEP2.0 was used to align &
synch both of the sources.  CEP2.0 used to adjust the volume
for the SBD & AUD. This is a 50% SBD, 50% AUD mix.

Design for use with a clear slim double jewel case.

Notes

D1 prior to stereo mixdown the right channel was slightly
lower on the SBD source.  I bumped them up 1.5db to match
the left channel. Set 2 was fine, no adjustments.

D2 and D3 can be assembled seamlessly on longer media.

Both the SBD and the AUD sources had breaks bwtn the D2
and D3 change.  Fortunately at different spots.  I patched
the missing SBD portion, approx 5 seconds, with the AUD.  I
patched the missing AUD portion, approx 2 seconds, with the
SBD.  The result was smooth and most likely unnoticeable.

There was approx 1:10 of crowd cut btwn the last song and
the encore on the AUD source.  I trimmed the SBD accordingly
b/c it wasn't worth the effort to patch crowd cheer.  It
still sounds pretty smooth anyway.
